HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. — An Indianapolis man has been charged in Hendricks County after reportedly stabbing his father during an argument the day after the Fourth of July.

According to court documents filed on Monday in Hendricks County, Joshua Rogers was charged with one count of attempted murder, a Level 1 felony, one count of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 5 felony, one count of criminal recklessness committed with a deadly weapon, a Level 6 felony.

On July 5, deputies with the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to a home for a reported stabbing. When deputies arrived, they found that a man had been stabbed. The man was later transported to a local hospital. Another person on scene, identified as Rogers, was also transported to a local hospital with a “severe laceration to one of his hands.”

The documents state that Rogers reportedly stabbed his father. In an interview with a witness, she said that the two were arguing inside the house when the father went into the kitchen. Rogers then asked him if “he was going to get a knife again,” in reference to a reported incident where the father attempted to stab Rogers a few months prior.

Rogers reportedly stabbed his father in the kitchen. The conflict later continued outside, the documents stated. At one point, the father reportedly grabbed a large tree branch and Rogers reportedly held his father in a head lock. As they were outside, Rogers reportedly told his father that he was going to kill him.

In the fight, the father reportedly sustained a stab wound to the right side of his back, as well as a laceration on his left eyebrow, the documents read.

In an interview, Rogers reportedly told deputies he and his father had been “‘going at it’ for awhile now and that (his father) had threatened him with a knife in the past.” Because of this history, Rogers said he assumed that his father was going to the kitchen during the argument to grab a knife, which led to the stabbing.

Rogers told deputies that he accidentally cut himself while using the knife on his father. The documents said that Rogers “apologized for what he had done and stated he could have handled the situation better.”

According to court documents, Rogers’ initial hearing scheduled for Thursday afternoon in Hendricks County.
