INDIANAPOLIS — More than a third of adults in the U.S. have a side hustle, which means they earn extra money alongside their main job. On average, these side hustlers make $891 each month, up from $810 last year.

“Side hustles are a little less common this year than last, likely because inflation has receded a bit and the job market has remained strong. But many Americans are finding that one job isn’t enough. The cost of living has risen sharply in recent years,” Bankrate Senior Industry Analyst Ted Rossman said.

People use this extra income differently: 37% spend it on things they want, like hobbies or entertainment, while 36% use it to cover everyday expenses such as rent and food. Saving money is a priority for 31% and 20% use their earnings to pay off debts.

“Pursuing a side hustle can be a great way to free up more money for debt payoff, savings, and other financial priorities,” added Rossman.

Interestingly, many side hustlers see it as a long-term need—32% believe they’ll always need a side hustle to make ends meet. Meanwhile, 16% hope their side gig will eventually become their main source of income.
