After more than 20 years on Cornell Avenue, Rene's Bakery has bid farewell, likely for good.

In an Instagram post Friday, Olivia Trevino, daughter of owner Albert Rene Trevino, said the bakery would close Sunday and that it "will most likely be closed indefinitely."

Albert Trevino, who opened Rene's in March 2004, was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer in April 2023. The bakery shortened its hours shortly thereafter and has ultimately elected to close indefinitely as Trevino faces extensive treatment.

In a follow-up post Sunday , Olivia Trevino said her father will undergo surgery to remove a tumor in his brain, one of two found in a recent MRI. The timeline of Trevino's treatment and recovery is unknown.

Friends and customers of Rene's have poured out support since the June 2023 announcement of the elder Trevino's condition.

A GoFundMe Olivia Trevino started June 5, 2023, to help pay her father's medical bills, raised nearly $10,000 in less than 12 hours. It is currently at $81,540, having eclipsed its original $50,000 goal and subsequent $75,000 goal. Since the fundraiser's inception, Albert has received chemo therapy and other treatment for multiple tumors in his head and neck.

Olivia and Albert expressed their gratitude for their community's support in recent social media posts, which have fielded hundreds of comments.

Follow the bakery's Instagram page for more information about the closing and future updates.
