Early Impressions Of Pacers Rookie Johnny Furphy

The Indiana Pacers are currently in Las Vegas, where they get to watch some of their newest and youngest players in the Summer League.

One of those players is rookie Johnny Furphy, the Australian guard drafted out of Kansas 35 th overall in the 2 nd round of the NBA Draft. Furphy, only 19 years old, has shown some flashes through the first few Summer League games. In his first contest he had 12 points; in the second game, he upped the ante by dropping 18 while going 7-of-14 shooting. While there aren’t huge expectations for Furphy heading into his first NBA season, he has acclimated himself well so far.

During Tuesday’s edition of The Ride With JMV, John spoke to Jeremiah Johnson of Bally Sports Indiana, who gave his thoughts on the Pacers rookie.

“I would say, you just want to be a little cautious and know that it’s summer league, but know that you really have someone that could be a real beneficial player in the future. As I was talking with Pat [Boylan] today, we were going through the rotation and the players coming back, and you see 11 players in maybe that line of separation, and you don’t really play an 11-man rotation, so how does that shake itself out? Furphy, assuming he’s on a regular contract and part of that 15, he would be outside that top 11, so you wouldn’t go into this season with the expectations that he would help you, but you’ve seen enough here in summer league, he has the size, the shooting ability…They thought highly of Johnny Furphy, not maybe necessarily for this season, but I think for someone that could really help you down the line, and the flashes we’ve seen in summer league, no reason to disagree with that at all.”
