A global technology outage is disrupting hospitals, banks and companies worldwide Friday morning, and is not sparing Indiana. AES Indiana customers woke up to discover they were unable to pay their bills due to the outage.
The cybersecurity company CrowdStrike said the problem arose from a defect found in a single content update for Microsoft Windows.

Thus far, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police, Marion County Courts and Probation offices, Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services, IndyGo, Eli Lilly, Kroger, Duke Energy, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office and 911 dispatch centers in Marion, Hamilton, Hancock and Shelby counties have said they are not impacted by the outage.
Social Security offices closed because of tech outage
The Social Security Administration has announced its local offices will be closed Friday "due to the global Microsoft and Crowdstrike issues."
The administration's phone lines remain open at 800-772-1213 and many services are available online at ssa.gov.
"We appreciate your patience while we work to restore services as quickly as possible," the administration said .
Flight cancellations:
The Indianapolis International Airport posted on social media that some airlines have forced a ground stop, meaning flights were not able to take off safely.
According to FlightAware , a global flight tracker, 92 delays and 38 cancellations were reported at Indianapolis International as of 5 p.m.
Flight statuses at the Indianapolis International Airport as of 9:36 a.m. showed multiple cancellations and delays from Delta and Southwest Airlines.

AES Indiana:
2:45 p.m.: AES Indiana customers are now able to pay bills and the issues with the company's payment vendor have been resolved, according to spokesperson Kelly Young. Young said customers who were unable to make a payment due to the outage will not be penalized.
8:50 a.m.: The power company AES Indiana posted on social media that customers are unable to pay bills due to the technology outage. The post assured customers that they will not apply late fees or disconnect customers for not paying bills due to the disruption.
Bureau of Motor Vehicles
2:15 p.m.: myBMV is back online, according to the bureau. Customers are encouraged to complete transactions through the online platform when possible, as some BMV kiosks are down. Branches are continuing to restore their systems
8 a.m.: The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles said the office is unable to process transactions. In an update at noon, the system remained offline.
Customers can check the bureau's website at in.gov/bmv or social media for updates.
Hospitals
The major hospital systems in Indianapolis are largely unaffected, except for some third-party health care vendors that may do business with the facilities.
Ascension said the health system doesn't use Crowdstrike, but they work with third party vendors that use the software and are offline temporarily.
Indiana University Health , Ascension and Community Health Network say patient care is not impacted, but some third-party vendors, like lab services or dictation services, are experiencing problems. However, scheduling and billing are not affected.
Franciscan Health says they don't use CrowdStrike and Eskenazi said the system is mostly unaffected.
Banks
Fifth Third : Some employees had trouble logging into work sites Friday morning, a Fifth Third spokesperson told IndyStar. Impacts for customers and branch networks are minimal while digital operations are not affected.
Chase: Customers have reported issues with online account access and payments. Chase said the bank is looking into customer reports.
Bank of America: Outages have been reported since 2 a.m. for online banking services, mobile checking deposits and fund transfers.
