Vice President Kamala Harris spoke about the future during a speech in Indianapolis , one in which she began to lay out a vision for what her presidency could look like.

"We share a vision for the future of our nation," Harris said. "A future where every person has the opportunity not just to get by but to get ahead. A future of social justice, health justice, economic justice. Ours is a vision of a future in which we realize the promise of America."

Speaking at the annual convention of the historically black sorority Zeta Phi Beta, the new Democratic candidate was met with enthusiasm and cheers. Harris is a member of another historically black sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha.

Harris was already scheduled to speak at the event before the whirlwind turn of events that led her to go from Biden's running mate to the presumptive Democratic nominee within the span of 48 hours. Thus Indiana, which backed former President Donald Trump in each of the last two elections, became one of her first stops as a candidate.

Continuing with the theme, she laid out a contrast between her vision of the future and Trump's vision, which she said is focused on the past.

"With your support, I am fighting for our nation's future," Harris said. "Let us be clear about what that future looks like. I know the leaders in this room. I know the future we believe in, and we fight for. We believe in a future where, for example, everyone has affordable healthcare."

Harris appears to have reenergized the Democratic Party after it spent weeks divided over whether or not President Joe Biden was healthy enough for a second term. Now that Biden has withdrawn from the race, Harris, 59, can cast herself as the young candidate against Trump, and as potentially the first female president.

She pointed out that the Biden administration had forgiven student loan debt for five million people, imploring the crowd to "testify" if they or anyone they know has benefitted from it.

Harris also lashed out at the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025 policy document, saying it would "return America to a dark past."

"This represents an outright attack on our children , our families, and our future," she said. "These extremists want to take us back, but we are not going back. We are not going back! Ours is a fight for the future."

Biden will give an address to the nation Wednesday night, in which he's expected to address his abrupt exit from the race and may speak on Harris's candidacy as well.
