IMPD officer has surgery after being shot on city’s far east side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An officer was injured in a shooting on the city’s far east side Friday night, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says.

At 8:40 p.m. Friday, IMPD officers were dispatched to the intersection of East 36th Street and North Wittfield Street on a report of shots fired. That is a residential area on the city’s far east side. As officers were on scene investigating, shots were fired from an unknown individual, injuring one of the officers. Officers provided the injured officer with medical attention, and he was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in stable condition.

“He had surgery this evening with one gunshot wound to his abdomen and one to his right arm, and he’s expected to make a full recovery but he’s going to be in the hospital for some days,” said IMPD Chief Chris Bailey.

IMPD later identified the injured officer as an East District officer who is in his eighth year with the department.

In a Saturday social media post, IMPD Chief Chris Bailey said that he had visited with the injured officer and his wife at Eskenazi Health Hospital.

“He’s in great spirits and thankful for the support for the community and his colleagues. Please pray for a speedy recovery,” Bailey wrote on X .

No Indianapolis police officers fired their weapons during Friday’s incident. Officers were equipped with body cameras which were activated at the time, IMPD said in a release.

There is no suspect in custody and IMPD did not share any details about possible suspects.

Investigators also ask that anyone in the area with surveillance cameras and/or doorbell cameras contact IMPD at 911 or anonymously through one of the crime resources linked below.
