INDIANAPOLIS — Indy Metro Police are investigating after an officer was shot Friday night near East 36th and North Wittfield streets.

Officers learned about a shooting in the area around 8:40 p.m., so they went to look for evidence and/or victims. But, while they were there, someone fired shots, hitting one officer and a house.

At this time, it is not clear who is responsible, or if that individual was specifically trying to target police. IMPD says it is still looking for the suspect.

The officer who was shot was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in stable condition, where he had surgery. He had been hit in the abdomen and right arm.

Chief Chris Bailey notes that he is expected to fully recover, but he will be in the hospital for “some days.” No one else was hurt.

State Police, the FBI, the ATF, and other organizations are now working together to figure out what exactly happened. If you know anything about this, please call the IMPD Homicide Office or Crime Stoppers.

If you live in the area and have a doorbell camera or other surveillance footage, you are also encouraged to share it with police.
