INDIANAPOLIS — Through the seventh round of airport infrastructure grants from the Federal Aviation Administration, the Indianapolis International Airport is expected to have more government funds go toward its reconstruction project.

According to a news release from the Indianapolis International Airport, the airport was awarded $26.6 million from the administration through its Airport Infrastructure Grants program. This will be part of the total of $146 million in funding that the airport has received to reconstruct an airport runway and taxiway to improve safety.

“This project is a significant investment in the future of aviation operations at IND – and is crucial to maintaining the public value of the airport,” Mario Rodriguez, the Indianapolis Airport Authority’s executive director, said in the release. “It’s a 10,000-foot-long runway, vital to handling cargo operations and commercial airline traffic.”

The runway and taxiway improvements are a part of the authority’s three-year, three-phase $295 million reconstruction project to enhance the airport’s capacity, including LED runway and taxiway lighting. The project is expected to be completed later this year.

“This crucial project is an example of IAA’s commitment to doing the right thing at the right time,” Jarod Klaas, the authority’s senior director of planning and development, said in the release. “And investing in sustainable and resilient development, maintenance and operations, backed with the support of this funding, is how we maintain the public value of the airport over time.”
