A24’s ‘Friday the 13th’ Prequel Series Now Has an ‘It’ Connection with New Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane

Brad Caleb Kane, welcome to Camp Crystal Lake.

The “It: Welcome to Derry” co-showrunner is now taking over A24’s “Friday the 13th” prequel series for Peacock. Kane was announced as the new showrunner after Bryan Fuller parted ways with the project.

Kane will serve as the series creator, writer, and executive producer, along with original 1980 “Friday the 13th” screenwriter Victor Miller. Other EPs are Miller’s copyright attorney Marc Toberoff, as well as a pair of Robert Barsamians: Robert M. Barsamian, and Robert P. Barsamian.

“From the moment I watched Jason Voorhees squeeze a guy’s eyeball out of its socket (in glorious 3D!) at the tender age of 8 years old, I knew my creative path was someday destined to converge with The Man Behind The Mask,” Kane said in a press statement. “Nothing defined my childhood more than growing up in the golden age of the slasher flick, and nothing’s defined the genre more than ‘Friday The 13th.’ I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity to contribute a chapter to this iconic franchise, particularly with such fearless partners as Peacock and A24.”

Kane recently served as co-showrunner and executive producer of the upcoming Max series “It: Welcome to Derry,” which is a prequel to the “It” movie. The series stars “It” actor Bill Skarsgård, who plays Pennywise.

“It: Welcome to Derry” will debut in 2025. Kane previously was a writer and executive producer on fellow Max series “Tokyo Vice,” with credits also on “Lodge 49,” “Black Sails,” and “Fringe.”

“Crystal Lake” was first announced in 2022 with “Hannibal” creator Fuller as showrunner. Fuller said in 2024 that he formally was no longer part of the show.

“Adapting classic horror is something I have some experience with. These shows require a vision that elevates and transforms, as well as delivers what audiences have come to expect, which is an ambitious and risky endeavor. It requires people to take the leap with me,” Fuller captioned on Instagram. “For reasons beyond our control, A24 has elected to go a different way with the material. We hope the final product will be something ‘Friday the 13th’ fans all over the world will enjoy.”

A report from TheWrap later said the $85 million-plus series was rife with budgeting issues. The report also had Charlize Theron in talks to play Pam Voorhees, the mother of undead killer Jason Voorhees. The show was believed to be set after the drowning of a young Jason Voorhees, with “Scream” screenwriter Kevin Williamson also onboard to pen an episode.

“Crystal Lake” isn’t the first “Friday the 13th” TV spinoff. The film franchise expanded into “Friday the 13th: The Series,” which aired for three seasons from 1987 through 1990.
