The lead star, writer, and executive producer plays Sam, a true Kansan on the surface, but, beneath it all, one who is actually struggling to fit the hometown mold. Grappling with loss and acceptance, Sam’s singing — her saving grace — leads her on a journey to self-discovery. Along the way, she finds and bonds with a community of outsiders who don’t fit in — but they don’t give up either.
Her bestie Joel (Jeff Hiller), sister Trish (Mary Catherine Garrison), and pal Fred Rococo (Murray Hill) comprise her orbit. In Season 3, all of the characters experience “growth against all odds,” per the logline. It’s a coming-of-age show, but the age they’re coming to is middle age.
Ólafur Darri Ólafsson also joins the cast for the final season .

The heart of Somebody Somewhere is friendship, and we will always hold dear the friendships on the screen and those forged behind the camera.”

The second season of “Somebody Somewhere” won a Peabody Award and was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award, the show’s second. Everett received individual nominations by the Critics Choice Awards (Best Actress in a Comedy Series) and the TCA Awards (Individual Achievement in Comedy). In 2022, Season 1 was honored by AFI amongst their Television Programs of the Year.
Everett told Rolling Stone that the series is “always about figuring out how to force Sam to grow because she’s so reluctant to.” She added of the character, “I feel so connected to Sam and when she grows, I feel like I grow too. And growth is change, and that’s overwhelming for Sam — and for the woman who plays her.”
Everett also credited HBO for continuing the show through three seasons.
“I keep thinking, how the fuck do we have three seasons of this show on the air?” Everett said. “I know this show is a very personal show to a lot of people, so I would never want to wrap anything up with a tiny little bow. I think you’re just sort of like, ‘This is where they are in their lives. It’s what’s happening now.’ And to me, these people are going to exist forever and I’ll never be done with them.”
Bos added, “We would make this show forever, but I feel like we’ve been so lucky in this climate to get these three seasons.”
The series is executive produced by Carolyn Strauss for Mighty Mint, Jay Duplass, Mark Duplass, and Mel Eslyn for Duplass Brothers Productions, and Tyler Romary; Shuli Harel produces. Season 3 is written by Bos, Thureen, Bridget Everett, Lisa Kron, and Lennon Parham. It is directed by Jay Duplass, Robert Cohen, and Lennon Parham.
