Gwyneth Paltrow Returns to Acting and Joins Timothée Chalamet in Josh Safdie’s Ping Pong Movie

Gwyneth Paltrow is making her return to the big screen for the first time in five years. The “Shakespeare in Love” Oscar winner will join Timothée Chalamet in “Marty Supreme,” a new film for A24 about a ping pong champion , directed by Josh Safdie.

Since reprising her role as Pepper Potts in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” Paltrow has somewhat stepped away from Hollywood (she also appeared in the series “The Politician” in 2020), saying she doesn’t miss screen acting and had a desire to one day do a Broadway play.

She did, however, joke that if anyone could get her back to acting, it would be Robert Downey Jr. , her “Iron Man” co-star. Coincidentally, Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as mega villain Doctor Doom — though it’s not as if Paltrow has ever been super aware of the goings on of the MCU .

Plot or character details haven’t been revealed for “Marty Supreme,” but the film is an original story written by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein.

“Marty Supreme” is produced by Eli Bush and Anthony Katagas. Bronstein, Safdie, and Chalamet are also producing alongside A24.

In 2022, Paltrow spoke about her time away from acting and why she wasn’t missing the grind of it at all.

“The team is always trying to get me to do a movie, but I really love what I do,” she told the “Today” show. “And I love how immediate it is, and how, you know, we’re able to create product out of thin air that we believe in so much.“

She also said she did promise her mother Blythe Danner that “at some point before I die,” she would do a play. That hasn’t happened yet, but there’s still plenty of time.

“I’m going to deliver on that promise at some point,” she said.

Paltrow is still deeply involved in her lifestyle brand goop, which started as just a weekly newsletter back in 2008. Some of her other screen credits include “Glee,” “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” “Seven,” “Shallow Hal,” “Great Expectations,” “Emma,” and the “Iron Man” franchise.
