‘The Diplomat’ Season 2 Teaser Ties Up That Massive Cliffhanger

Editor’s note: This post contains big spoilers for the end of the first season of Netflix’s “The Diplomat.”

For fans of “The Diplomat,” one mystery is officially solved.

Netflix released the first teaser for the political thriller starring Emmy nominee Keri Russell as U.S. ambassador to London Kate Wyler. “The Diplomat” Season 2 teaser reveals the fate of her husband, Hal (Rufus Sewell): He’s apparently alive following a massive car bombing in the final seconds of Season 1.

The wordless Season 2 teaser trailer shows Kate and Hal arm in arm at some kind of fancy event, clearly them against the world now that Kate knows that the shocking terror attack came from inside the British government at the highest levels. Additionally, viewers can assume that Kate — who was ready to divorce fellow career diplomat Hal by the end of Season 1 — is likely thinking about her marriage differently now that Hal has miraculously survived (or, at the very least, for political reasons, knows she’s now tied to him for at least a few more years).

Here’s the official logline for Season 2: “A deadly explosion in the heart of London shatters US Ambassador Kate Wyler’s world (Keri Russell). Struggling to rebuild the lives that broke and the team that split apart, Kate’s worst fears unfold: The attack that brought her to the UK didn’t come from a rival nation, it came from inside the British government. As Kate chases the truth, her only real ally is her almost-ex-husband Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), very much alive, and very much involved. She faces a fraught marriage, a complex dynamic with British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), and a threatening visit from Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney).”

The teaser also shows fans their first glimpse of Janney as Vice President Penn, staring down Kate in a way that suggests the two may be on opposite sides of constantly changing political waves. Emmy-winning Janney, always a favorite, was last seen on TV in “Palm Royale” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” this year.

Created by “Homeland” alum Debora Cahn, the second season will also star Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh. It’s executive produced by Janice Williams, Keri Russell, Peter Noah, and Alex Graves.

Watch “The Diplomat” Season 2 teaser below. The season will premiere October 31 on Netflix.
