Richard Gadd Says He ‘Fought Real Hard’ for ‘Baby Reindeer’ Ending and Has No Plans for a Follow-Up

“Baby Reindeer” was always conceived as a limited series and with the lawsuit now facing Netflix and the production, it’s probably best left that way. Speaking to IndieWire’s Vincent Perella on the red carpet of the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, Gadd said he was delighted that Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has come out in support of the comedian recently as he faces litigation from his former stalker.

“I didn’t know any of that. I’ve been up here. I’ve been in L.A. soaking in the atmosphere. I’ve been focusing on Emmys and all the exciting things happening in the city,” Gadd said upon being told about Sarandos’ recent comments in support of him. “So I honestly couldn’t tell you what’s happening in the outside world right now. But I love Ted. I met him a few times. He’s been great to me. So yeah, I really love that.”

Even with the backing of Sarandos and with many fans curious if the “Baby Reindeer” creator and star will find a way to expand the show, either with a second season or as an anthology, Gadd is putting any rumors of further installments to bed here and now.

“No, I don’t think so. I was I’m proud of that ending. I fought real hard for that ending. I really wanted ‘Baby Reindeer’ to end in the way that it did. I really fought for that and I think it couldn’t have ended better,” Gadd said to IndieWire. “There’s a full circularity to season one which I love. And so I think some things are best left. And I think there’s so much love for it. I just think leaving it there on the platform as a kind of artistic gem for people to enjoy, for people to discover, I think that’s absolutely fine by me.”

The show has already made history as Gadd’s co-star, Nava Mau, became the first Latinx transgender woman to be nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Anthology Series or Movie. Her fellow castmate, Jessica Gunning , is nominated in the same category with Gadd up for Lead Actor and Tom Goodman-Hill up for Supporting Actor. “Baby Reindeer” is up for 11 nominations total and have already won 2 at the Creative Arts Emmys for editing and casting.
