‘The Diplomat’ Season 2 Trailer: Allison Janney Just Might Torment Keri Russell in Government Drama

The Season 2 trailer teases a visit from the Vice President (Allison Janney) just as U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) is contemplating a run for President. Of course, add in a domestic terrorist attack and Kate doesn’t know who to trust anymore.

The official synopsis for “The Diplomat” Season 2 reads: “A deadly explosion in the heart of London shatters U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler’s world (Russell). Struggling to rebuild the lives that broke and the team that split apart, Kate’s worst fears unfold: The attack that brought her to the U.K. didn’t come from a rival nation, it came from inside the British government. As Kate chases the truth, her only real ally is her almost-ex-husband Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), very much alive, and very much involved. She faces a fraught marriage, a complex dynamic with British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), and a threatening visit from Vice President Grace Penn (Janney).”

Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh also star, with the additional cast including Celia Imrie, Michael McKean, Nana Mensah, and Miguel Sandoval.

Russell executive produces the series along with Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Peter Noah, and showrunner and creator Debora Cahn (“Homeland”).

The Emmy-nominated political drama utilizes research and prep with actual diplomats. Russell and Sewell worked with unnamed state officials and even visited The Winfield House to get into their respective characters.

Yet the political lingo proved to be the most difficult to master, as Sewell told IndieWire .

“These are smart, fast people who use humor to deal with the shit they have to go through,” Sewell said. “There was a lot of political speak, but at the same time it felt like actual people speaking. […] I did a show once where so much of the dialogue was expositional, that it literally got stuck in my throat. I had a physical reaction to it. I couldn’t get it out. But with this, everyone has a human reason to say what they’re saying, and also: They’ve got a fucking sense of humor about it.”
