Finally, some happy news on Heroes Day : “The Leftovers” reunion is officially a go.

For its 2025 event, ATX TV Festival has announced plans to host the cast and creatives behind HBO’s acclaimed drama series. Co-creators Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta will be joined by director and executive producer Mimi Leder , along with cast members Justin Theroux, Carrie Coon, Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Ann Dowd, and Kevin Carroll for a panel discussion led by moderator Sarah Aubrey, an executive producer on the series and the current head of Max Original Programming. Per the ATX release, the group will “reflect on the show’s emotional three-season journey, its most memorable moments , and enduring themes more than 10 years later.”

“The Leftovers” tracks the extended Garvey family three years after a global tragedy, when 2 percent of the world’s population vanished without a trace on October 14, 2011 (a date later commemorated as Heroes Day). Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux) is the police chief in Mapleton, New York. His ex-wife, Laurie (Amy Brenneman), has joined a local cult called The Guilty Remnant led by Patti Levin (Ann Dowd). Their family friend, Matt Jamison (Christopher Eccleston), is a pastor, and his sister, Nora Durst (Carrie Coon), lost her husband and two children during the Sudden Departure.

Eventually, the group finds its way to Jarden, TX, a small town that became a national landmark once the world realized no one within the city limits disappeared on October 14. For production purposes, the real-life city of Lockhart (located 30 miles south of Austin) served as the fictional town of “Miracle.” Most of Season 2 as well as parts of Season 3 were shot in and around the Texas state capitol.

Not only does “The Leftovers” have roots in the ATX TV Festival’s hometown, it’s also been a recurring presence at the festival itself. Lindelof, Leder, Eccleston, Coon, and Dowd all took part in a 2015 panel conversation that looked back on Season 1 and teased Season 2, while Lindelof, Leder, and Perrotta returned to ATX after the 2017 series finale for one last look back at “The End.”

While the series struggled to entice general audiences in its first season, intensifying critical acclaim and ardent word of mouth helped entrench “The Leftovers” as one of TV’s all-time great series . As far as awards add to a legacy, Carrie Coon won the 2017 TCA Award for Individual Achievement in a Drama Series, Ann Dowd secured the show’s only Emmy nomination for Best Guest Actress that same year , and the WGA Awards nominated “The Leftovers” for each of its three seasons, including the Season 2 classic, “International Assassin,” in Best Episodic Drama.

Few dramas have evoked such intense emotional reactions from fans, critics, and creators , nor have many sought, let alone reached, the imaginative peaks summited by Lindelof, Perrotta & Co across three increasingly adventurous seasons. When it premiered, critics noted connections to 9/11 . Years after it ended, parallels to the COVID-19 pandemic emerged. Prescient and powerful, “The Leftovers” has already stood the test of time .

Next year, fans old and new can appreciate the masterpiece all over again, in person. The ATX Television Festival is scheduled to run May 29 – June 1, 2025 in Austin, TX. Passes are available now . The first 100 Camp or GP Badges purchased using the code “ILOVETV” will be $100 off. Watch a special announcement for “The Leftovers” reunion below.
