Ingmar Bergman and Liv Ullman’s iconic film “Faithless” is now being remade into a limited series, continuing the trend of TV reimaginings of past Bergman features like “Scenes From a Marriage.”

“Faithless” is directed by “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and “Let The Right One In” helmer Tomas Alfredson. Sara Johnsen wrote the script adapted from Bergman’s original screenplay for the 2000 feature.

The “Faithless” series will debut at TIFF 2024 . Fremantle is handling the worldwide sales. The show is a six-part TV series.

The official synopsis reads: “In the present day, renowned director David Howard, 73, is reunited with his former great love, actress Marianne Vogler, 75 (Lena Endre). Their encounter forces them to confront the painful repercussions of their past relationship, not only for themselves but also for their families. 40 years prior, a young David (Gustav Lindh) and Marianne (Frida Gustavsson) find themselves entwined in a passionate love affair which they must keep a secret, as Marianne is married to David’s best friend, Markus (August Wittgenstein).”

The show is produced by Miso Film’s Christian Rank, Jonas Allen, and Peter Bose. “Faithless” is a SVT (Sweden) and ARTE France release.

Endre comes full circle with the series reimagining after having led the original 2000 film.

“Faithless” series director Alfredson exclusively told IndieWire that he “became obsessed with Bergman’s story” after watching the feature.

“I wanted to create my own interpretation of it. A few years ago Swedish Television asked me if I wanted to do something for them, and I mentioned this old passion project, and they thought it was a great idea,” Alfredson said. “Ingmar Bergman is one of the most important constitutors of modern cinema and theatre. It’s impossible to overlook the significance of his work. In Scandinavian culture, it’s hard to find someone more influential. Not only does he have a unique gaze on relationships, but also on the Scandinavian soul: the way we talk and interact. His visual and aesthetic world has deeply influenced Swedish filmmaking whether you like it or not.”

Alfredson revealed that assembling the “Faithless” cast was “the most complicated casting process I’ve ever done” due to the time jump. “I think it ended up better than I would ever imagine,” he added, citing the wide appeal across audience ages. “I dare to say passion has no age and I really hope ‘Faithless’ will reach a broad audience, from 20 and up.”

    ‘Faithless’

The 2000 film “Faithless,” directed by Liv Ullmann, starred Endre, Thomas Hanzon, and Krister Henriksson in the core love triangle. “Persona” actress Ullman further collaborated on “Scenes From a Marriage,” and “Cries and Whispers,” among many other films, and also shared a daughter, Linn Ullmann. Ullmann was Oscar-nominated in 1977 for Bergman’s “Face to Face” and received an Honorary Academy Award in 2022.

Ullmann told Variety in 2023 that she banned Bergman from the “Faithless” set during the majority of production, despite him writing the film.

“When I was directing ‘Faithless,’ he was allowed on set only on our last day. He hid under a blanket and just lay there, until an actress noticed it was shaking. He was laughing so hard,” Ullmann said. “People are surprised to hear that: they all think I’m like Bergman. But the truth is, he was a child.”

Swedish director Bergman drew on a series of disintegrated personal relationships, including his partnership with Ullmann, for the 1973 miniseries “Scenes from a Marriage,” later condensed into a feature version. Ullmann led the original series as an unhappily married divorce lawyer drifting from her psychology professor husband. It was remade for HBO in 2021 with Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain starring.

As for “Faithless” series helmer Alfredson’s upcoming projects, he teased to IndieWire that he is still open to pursuing the long-awaited “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” sequel .

“If it happens, I’d love to see it,” Alfredson said. “And shoot it.”

“Faithless” is coming soon. Check out the trailer below.
