Roadwork closing lanes on Highway 111 in Indio this week

Drivers making a nighttime jaunt through Indio this week may want to avoid Highway 111, at least on the far west side of the city.

The city began a street paving project Monday that will see a mile-long stretch of the roadway reduced to one lane for three nights. Here is what to know about the project.

Where is the work being done?

The work is being done on Highway 111 between Jefferson Street and Madison Street.

    What is happening?

A contractor is grinding down the top of the road surface and replacing it with new asphalt, which will then be filled in with new traffic striping and roadway markings. The city also says minor adjustments are being made to utility covers on the roadway.

    When is this being done?

Work is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. each night and continue until 5 a.m. It began Monday night and will finish Thursday morning. The city said it choose to do the work at night to reduce the impact on residents.

    What are the alternatives?

Depending on your starting point and destination, alternatives include Miles Avenue and Avenue 42 to the north of Highway 111 and Avenue 48 to the south of Highway 111.
