Memorial Day is seen by many as the unofficial start of summer, a time for backyard barbecues and trips to the swimming pool. The holiday is one of several dates on the calendar year that commemorates the armed forces. Originally called "Decoration Day," Memorial Day honors those who died while serving in the U.S. military.

Here's a look at when Memorial Day is this year and what's open and closed.

    When is Memorial Day?

Are government offices open Memorial Day?

All federal and state offices in Indiana will be closed Monday, May 27. That includes local government within Marion County and Indianapolis as well. The City-County offices will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day.

Will the post office be open Memorial Day?

The United States Postal Service will be closed Memorial Day. There will be no mail delivery.

Most FedEx services will be closed Monday with the exception of FedEx Custom Critical and FedEx Office, which will operate under modified hours. There will be no UPS pickup or delivery service on Memorial Day. However, UPS Express Critical will remain available.

Will my trash get picked up on Memorial Day?

What else is closed for Memorial Day?

Most schools are closed Memorial Day or out for the summer. And while Monday might be a good opportunity to catch up on reading, don't expect to do it at the library.

All branches of the Indianapolis Public Library system will be closed May 25-27 in observance of the holiday with the exception of the InfoZone at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis. Books, audiobooks, magazines and movies can be downloaded or streamed, however, at the library's online portal.
