    Watch for meteors, help clean up a river or learn about wildflowers and young Abe Lincoln

    It looks like Hoosiers are in for another beautiful weekend, so why not spend part of it exploring and enjoying Indiana's amazing state parks .

    The forecast for Saturday and Sunday calls for highs in the upper 70s both days, with only a slight chance of scattered showers Saturday.

    Some of your weekend options include watching for meteors from the shoreline of Lake Michigan and helping clean up the Tippecanoe River. There's also a wildflower hike and a children's "fun day" program.

    Most programs and events are free, but may require a park pass or daily admission fee. Check here for more events at Indiana's state park.

    Saturday, August 10: Make crafts, play games, watch meteors

    Winamac Fish and Wildlife River Clean Up, 8 a.m. to noon, Tippecanoe River State Park, 4200 N. US 35, Winamac

    Get to know the Winamac Fish and Wildlife team and give them a hand collecting debris from the river and its banks. Bring your canoe, kayak or jon boat, life jacket, gloves, trash bags, insect repellent and sunscreen. Meet at River Tent Boat Launch Area.

    Children's Outdoor Day, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Spring Mill State Park, 3333 State Road 60 East, Mitchell

    Children are invited to wonder and wander during a special, day-long program that includes games, craft projects, and learning about Indiana’s natural resources.  Check the Spring Mill Facebook page and DNR Calendar for more information.

    17th Annual Perseid Meteor Shower and Stargaze, 9 p.m. Central, Indiana Dunes State Park, 1600 N. 25 E., Chesterton

    This annual shooting star event marks the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower. Telescopes for deep sky viewing and constellation talks will be set-up at the West Parking Lot. The best star observations taking place after 9:30 p.m. CST. Bring a chair, towel, bug spray and flashlights to enjoy these spectacular views from the park’s beach. This program is weather-dependent. Check the park’s Facebook page for updates and cancellations.

    Sunday, August 11: Follow footsteps of Lincoln, prance through prairie

    Abe's Neighborhood Walk, 8-9 a.m. Central, Lincoln State Park, State Road 162, Lincoln City, IN 47552

    Meet at the Nature Center for a hour-long hike that visits several historic sites associated with Abraham Lincoln and his family. You'll also learn some local history and and more about the Civilian Conservation Corps. This location is in the Central Time Zone.

    Prairie Prance, 1-2:30 p.m., Fort Harrison State Park, 6000 N. Post Road, Indianapolis

    Take a walk among the wildflowers with a naturalist who will help identify some key flora and fauna and explain the importance of our prairie and grassland habitats within the park. Meet in the Schoen Creek Trailhead parking lot for a one-mile hike along Tree Line Trail.

    Friends Of Tippecanoe River State Park Meeting, 6:30-7:30 p.m., 4200 N. U.S. 35, Winamac

    The friends Group is a non-profit volunteer organization that supports this park. Everyone is welcome to attend and learn more. The volunteers do conservation activities, education, recreation, and historic preservation and promote the activities of the park.     Stargazing, Brown County State Park, 9-10:30 p.m., 1405 S.R. 46 W, Nashville

    Join a park naturalist for an evening of stargazing. A telescope will be set up at Hoen Point at 9 p.m., with the goal of focusing on the M17 Nebula. Participant will also have a chance of seeing some of the Perseid Meteor Shower. Visitors are asked to be considerate of the naturalist and other visitors by minimizing the use of flashlights and headlights. Hoen Point does not have a restroom, so plan accordingly.
