A recent Carmel High School graduate and volunteer with the mayor’s transition committee is facing charges in connection with harassing voicemails that were left for the school’s principal.

The 18-year-old is facing two charges of harassment using a telephone call. He was on Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam’s transition committee and helped evaluate the Carmel Mayors Youth Council as she took over the office in January.

IndyStar is not identifying the 18-year-old because the charges he's facing are misdemeanors.

The Carmel Police Department began investigating in July after Carmel High School principal Timothy Phares found the voicemails left on his and his wife’s phones, court documents read.

“I’d like to see your head on a spike, but unfortunately it might not happen for a good 40 years,” the caller said in one voicemail, according to the probable cause affidavit for the 18-year-old's arrest.

In the second voicemail, the caller identified himself by name and told the principal he was running the high school poorly and would be watching him.

“I'm going to try and make your life as hard as possible for the rest of my life, and I am 18 years old,” the caller said in the second voicemail, according to the affidavit.

Rebecca Carl, chief of staff for the City of Carmel, said the 18-year-old volunteered with the city for about 60 days starting last November and he has not been involved since.

Phares declined to comment for this article through the school district.

"The district is aware of the situation and is committed to supporting our staff,” said Emily Bauer, director of community relations for Carmel Clay Schools.

An attorney for the 18-year-old declined to comment when reached by IndyStar. A bench trial in the case is scheduled for Nov. 13, court records show.
