NFL Week 4 picks, predictions: Indianapolis Colts vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

The Indianapolis Colts (1-2) host the Pittsburgh Steelers (3-0) in NFL Week 4 action, and the Colts face two major questions:

∎ Can they trust quarterback Anthony Richardson to move the ball error-free? He has been exciting (league-high 5 completions of 40+ yards) and erratic (league-leading 6 interceptions).

∎ Can their defense stop the Steelers ' grind-it-out attack? Pittsburgh has consistently put together time-consuming drives that mostly result in field goals. However, in the first two weeks, the Colts' defense couldn't stop the run.

These picks like the Steelers and under 40 total points.

NFL Week 4 picks, predictions for Colts vs. Steelers

Bill Bender, Sporting News : Steelers 21-17

The Steelers are one of the last unbeaten teams in the AFC, and they are doing it with the classic formula of a defense that allows 229.7 yards and 8.7 points per game and conservative yet effective play from Justin Fields. The Steelers also are perfect against the spread, a product of lines that have been four points or less so far. Anthony Richardson will make a few plays, but the Colts are 31st against the run (179.0 ypg). Fields will make a few plays with his legs, too.

Mike Florio, Pro Football Talk : Steelers 20-13

The Steelers have the balance that the Colts currently don’t.

    Ali Bhanpuri, NFL.com : Steelers 20-16

On Sunday, the Steelers offense is going to run the ball, maintain possession, take a few select shots down field and be comfortable punting on fourth-and-short (even when the analytics might advise otherwise). Defensively, they're going to control the line of scrimmage, eliminate the big play and use four-man pressure to force Anthony Richardson into quick, unwise decisions. We know this is their plan. They know we know. They do not care. Against a Colts defense that had given up 474 total yards on the ground prior to an advantageous Week 3 meeting with the anemic Bears rushing attack (if you can even call it that), the Steelers should be able to play their brand of ball: pick up just enough first downs and points to keep the defense rested (it'll need to be, with Alex Highsmith out) and playing with the lead. If Justin Fields continues to take care of the football, Pittsburgh moves to 4-0 for the second time during Mike Tomlin's tenure.

Ian Hanford, Bleacher Report : Steelers 20-17

It's hard to find a better unit than the Steelers defense on either side of the ball so far this season, and it's not just T.J. Watt this time. The defensive line is wreaking havoc, Joey Porter Jr. is rounding into a shutdown CB on the perimeter and Watt is still his typical dominant self off the edge.

Sam Farmer, Los Angeles Times : Steelers 17-10

Pittsburgh’s defense is playing great, and Justin Fields is protecting the football and getting the job done. He’s due for a bit of a letdown game, but unlikely to take a step backward here.

Pete Prisco, CBS Sports : Steelers 20-16

The Steelers are riding high at 3-0 and their style travels well. They are physical defense that will limit the Colts run game and make Anthony Richardson beat them. He won't. The Steelers and Justin Fields will do enough on offense to pull out a victory.

Blake Schuster, For The Win : Colts cover the 1.5-point spread

Pittsburgh’s 3-0 record is super inflated. The Colts have a better offense and should be able to score more than 10 points against the Steelers — something none of their other opponents have done yet.

Jordan Mendoz, USA TODAY : Steelers 19-13

Justin Fields has looked so comfortable in Pittsburgh and as long as he plays mistake-free football, it'll be tough to take down Pittsburgh. The Steelers have yet to play a game with more than 30 combined points, so the under is a safe play here.
