INDIANAPOLIS — The referees missed at least one obvious call in last week’s 21-16 Indianapolis win over Chicago, although the call did not end up having much bearing on the final outcome.

Bears defensive end Montez Sweat reached out and grabbed Indianapolis running back Jonathan Taylor by the jersey at the back of his shoulder pads and yanked down, a clear horse-collar considering that Taylor’s jersey was visible pulling away from his body.

The play was not flagged during the game.

But the NFL did fine Sweat $16,883 for a horse-collar tackle in the days after the game, an acknowledgement that an infraction had been committed. The penalty didn’t end up making much of an impact; Indianapolis ended up scoring a touchdown on a 1-yard Trey Sermon run at the end of the series.

Colts linebacker E.J. Speed was also flagged for a hit during Sunday’s game, drawing a fine of $16,883 for a blow to the head and neck area of Chicago rookie quarterback Caleb Williams in the first quarter. Speed was flagged for roughing the passer on the play.
