Each week readers will vote on Central Indiana students who were nominated by their schools for their excellence in the classroom and beyond.

Readers can vote for their favorite student throughout the week at the bottom of this story on IndyStar.com , with polling closing at noon on Thursday, Oct. 4. Winners will be announced every Friday.

This contest aims to introduce readers not just to the student who winds up winning but to all of the highly accomplished nominees.

Here's what nominating school leaders had to say about this week's nominees:

Desron Beauchamp, a sophomore at Ben Davis High School. "Dezy is creative, imaginative, and innovative. Dezy ranks first in her sophomore class and would be the first to tell you how much work and effort she has put into the achievement. Dezy, along with the person who ranks second in their class, are friends, but beyond that, they are a support network, offering each other a shoulder to lean on, a mind to brainstorm with, and generally, just a fabulous person who is bound and determined to make the most out of all opportunities. We are nominating Dezy for embodying the characteristics of 'creating, imagining, and innovating' because those three verbs illustrate the way that she is thinking about her time here at Ben Davis: she is creating herself as a serious student who is involved in academics, athletics, and school culture; she is imagining a future and taking the steps and putting in the hard work to get to that goal; she is innovating her habits in order to be the best students, classmates, friends, and teammates in order to make sure every day is a good day. In doing so, Dezy has transformed their perspectives. They are happy every day to face the challenges that await. She is truly an amazing Giant."

Isaac Bemis, a sophomore at Greenwood High School . Isaac's school principal said he was nominated because he had zero unexcused absences and zero tardies, in the first month of school.

Cooper Elsey, a senior at Franklin Central High School . "Cooper is a dynamic leader on our large school campus; he is an active member of our award-winning show choir, an honor roll student, and the President of the Creative Writing Club. He led a 9-11 tribute that touched all those who attended. He is a consistent "Boom Ticket" winner for all the little things he does to help others, and he has been recognized by several teachers in our building for the Susan Tomlinson ALL IN Award. Simply put, Cooper is a role model for students and teachers with his positive, can-do attitude. We are so proud of Cooper!"

Sydney Hartman, a senior at Southport High School. "Sydney Hartman is an exceptional senior at Southport High School who has truly made the most of her time here. Academically, she stands out by taking every Honors, AP, and DC course available, excelling in each one. What makes her accomplishments even more remarkable is how she balances her academic rigor with an impressive list of extracurriculars. Sydney is not only a key member of the swimming team, club swimming, volleyball, lacrosse, and flag football, but she also finds time to give back to her community by volunteering at a food bank and assisting fellow students through peer tutoring. In addition, she spends her summers teaching swimming, sharing her passion with others. Sydney's dedication, drive, and generosity make her a truly outstanding student."

Mayanna is extremely bright and has strong communication and self-efficacy skills."

She has spent many of her own evenings helping GC host events, meet families and advocate for students who live in Anderson. She is an excellent communicator, (in both English and Spanish) who is known for her positivity and warmth. When new students have questions, or a student needs a Shadow Host, we know that we can count on her! Guerin Catholic is lucky to have a student like her!"
