NYSP investigating fatal vehicle crash Thursday in Cape Vincent

CAPE VINCENT, N.Y. (WWTI) – One person is dead after a fatal motor vehicle crash Thursday afternoon in Jefferson County.

New York State Police were dispatched just after 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 10 to a single-vehicle crash on State Route 12E near the intersection of County Route 8 in the town of Cape Vincent.

The investigation determined that the vehicle was traveling westbound on State Route 12E when it exited the left shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle traveled around 650 feet into a field before striking a tree head-on.

The car then caught fire, and the driver was trapped in the vehicle. Multiple attempts were made by passing motorists to remove the driver from the car. However, they were unsuccessful. The driver was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene after Cape Vincent Fire Department extinguished the fire.

The driver’s name is not being released at this time pending notification of kin.

State troopers were assisted at the scene by the Cape Vincent Fire Department, Cape Vincent Ambulance, Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office and Jefferson County Office of Fire and Emergency Management.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.
