The Ingleside Lady Mustangs saw an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter vanish in falling to the Floresville Jaguars 65-56 on Feb. 12 in a Class 4A bi-district playoff game in Cuero.

The Lady Mustangs finished the season with a 23-11 record. Floresville (23-13) advanced to the area playoff against Alice.

The Lady Mustangs built a 42-31 lead with just under six minutes remaining in the game. But Floresville’s full-court press forced numerous Ingleside turnovers and enabled the Jaguars to make their comeback.

The Lady Mustangs’ Shaelea Ruiz made a pair of free throws with 17.1 seconds left to pad Ingleside’s lead to 53-50. With 10.6 seconds left, Floresville’s Jordin Johns missed two free throws, but teammate Alissa Hilario rebounded the second miss and passed the ball out to Ameriah Ruiz, who sank a 3-pointer to tie the game at 53-all with 5.1 seconds remaining.

Ingleside was not able to get off a shot before the buzzer ended regulation.

The Lady Mustangs’ Krystal Jewell, who had a team-high 21 points, fouled out early in the extra period and Ingleside managed only three points.

“That’s probably the most disappointing loss I’ve had in my 26 years,” Ingleside coach Lance Whittle said. “The girls played their hearts out. Little things just happened here and there.”

Mattie Agnew added 17 points for the Lady Mustangs and Shaelea Ruiz followed with 15.

“I think the moment got to us a little bit,” Whittle said. “But we won 23 games. My seniors have won 61 games over the last three years. That’s a vast improvement over what they had the previous few years. I’m proud of what our seniors have done.”
