Whether they want to learn a trade so they can get a head start on a career or learn skills so they don’t have to pay someone else to fix things in their own homes, area high school students can take various workforce training programs at Barton Community College at no tuition cost through a state-funded program called “Excel in CTE (SB155)”, which aims to increase interest in trade-based careers.

The Kansas State Wildcats are a team experienced at being competitive in the Big 12 Conference and this season should be no exception. Last year the Wildcats missed out on a second straight berth in the Big 12 Championship Game and finished the season 9-4 with a win in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. The season before, the Wildcats got to the Big 12 title game and beat TCU in overtime in what might be one of the best championship games in league history.

The Kansas Jayhawks are facing a different kind of opponent in 2024 as they will play all their home games in Kansas City away from the friendly confines of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence as one of the oldest college stadiums in the country is undergoing a massive renovation project. Kansas’ first two home games will be at Children’s Mercy Park, home of Sporting KC of Major League Soccer and the remaining home games will be played at Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite the chaotic schedule ahead, expectations are high for this squad with Kansas coming off a successful 9-4 campaign in 2023 which culminated in winning their first bowl game in 15 years, a 49-36 victory over UNLV in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix, Arizona.

Hays Striders compete at AAU Junior Olympics
The Hays Striders track team sent 17 athletes to the 2024 AAU Junior Olympic games in Greensboro, North Carolina from July 27 through August 3. The meet was highlighted by four Striders earning All-American awards and a National Champion performance by Riley Leiker. Leiker took the gold medal in the 9 year old girls shot put throwing 23’11 ¼.” The multi-talented Strider also found herself on the podium with a 6th place finish in the 800 (2:41.72).
