Maricopa Unified School District’s superintendent said internet chatter this morning suggesting “a potential school shooting” was “not considered a credible threat.”

Dr. Tracey Lopeman said district schools would remain open today while the threat was investigated.

“This morning, we sent an email to parents informing them about an ongoing safety investigation,” MUSD spokesperson Mishell Terry said. “The Maricopa Police Department, in coordination with federal law enforcement, identified preliminary internet chatter regarding a potential school threat. School will continue as scheduled while we closely monitor the situation with law enforcement. We are committed to keeping our parents informed and will provide updates as necessary.”

In a letter to parents, Lopeman told them that “Maricopa Police Department has informed us that a federal law enforcement partner has identified internet chatter suggesting a potential school shooting. At this time, the information is preliminary, not specific to MUSD and not considered a credible threat.”

Details about the threat were not disclosed.

“We are closely monitoring the situation with law enforcement to ensure the safety of our students,” Lopeman said.
