If you’re not up to climbing Mount Everest (you know, like most of us), modern technology has created a way to experience this incredible hike through video! DJI, a Chinese tech company, sent a drone up the mountain to grab some absolutely stunning POV footage. It’s a great way to see this spectacular sight without leaving your living room! You’ll find the view from the top especially breathtaking.

To recreate the experience of climbing Mount Everest, the video follows a common route that hikers would actually take. It begins at Base Camp, traveling up to the summit. That’s 29,032 feet above sea level! Outside Magazine shared footage from the drone’s journey on social media.

Adventurers might wonder why anyone would want to experience something like climbing Mount Everest through video. However, this incredibly dangerous journey is not feasible for everyone. In fact, Business Insider tells us that 12 people perished on the mountain in 2023, while five more have gone missing. Over 300 climbers have died making the climb in the past century or so.

When someone dies on Mount Everest, that means someone else has to retrieve the body. Often, that task falls to groups of Nepali soldiers — who put their own lives at risk in order to do it. Army Major Aditya Karki explained to Outside that it’s important to collect the bodies of the deceased so that their families can grieve properly. They also want to avoid traumatizing other hikers.

“Seeing a dead body on Everest is gruesome,” he explained. “Last year, a number of clients were distressed by passing the bodies of dead climbers on their climb. This can have long-lasting psychological effects and impact their well-being, which we want to prevent.”

Obviously, you shouldn’t give up on your dreams out of fear. However, it’s always important to weigh the risks, too! For those of us who (understandably) are not in a hurry to undertake the perilous hike up Mount Everest, watching a video of the climb is a pretty attractive alternative.
