Scientists Finally Determined What’s Inside The Moon & It’s Not Cheese

As kids, many of us believed the Moon was made of cheese. As we grew older, we realized it was a silly joke. Sure, we know the Moon isn’t made of cheese. But we’ll admit, we’re not quite sure what it’s really made of. Scientists say they’ve got it all figured out.

According to an investigation led by astronomer Arthur Briaud of the French National Centre for Scientific Research, the Moon’s inner core is a solid ball with a density similar to iron.

“Our results question the evolution of the Moon’s magnetic field thanks to its demonstration of the existence of the inner core and support a global mantle overturn scenario that brings substantial insights on the timeline of the lunar bombardment in the first billion years of the Solar System,” the astronomer wrote.

The Team Did A Lot Of Work To Figure Out What’s Inside The Moon

According to Science Alert , Briaud and his team analyzed data from space missions. They also used lunar laser-ranging experiments to determine the lunar characteristics. They then created models to try to recreate a close match with the observational data.

The scientists found that the densest material inside the moon falls toward the center, and the less dense material rises. This activity reportedly helps to explain the volcanic regions of the Moon.

They also found the lunar core to be like Earth’s, having an outer fluid layer and a solid inner core. The inner core of the Moon was also found to be particularly dense, similar to iron.

It’s been more than 50 years since humans have been to the Moon, but NASA has plans to change that. “We’re going back to the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and inspiration for a new generation of explorers: the Artemis Generation. While maintaining American leadership in exploration, we will build a global alliance and explore deep space for the benefit of all.”
