Extreme Weather Sparks Rare Rainbow Lightning Phenomenon Over MLB Game

For many people, a baseball game is the place to be in the summer. Baseball is America’s pastime, and fans flock to stadiums nationwide to watch their favorite teams play ball. Even though it’s hot in August, that doesn’t stop die-hard baseball fans from catching a game.

Those in attendance at the Minnesota Twins game at Target Field in Minneapolis on August 26 got a little extra with the admission price. During the game, a photographer for the Twins caught an amazing image of rainbow lightning . It’s an incredibly rare occurrence and made the sky a gorgeous mix of purple and red.

The Twins shared the image on X with the caption, “Baseball skies.”

The photo went viral, with hundreds of people commenting about how beautiful the shot was.

“This gotta be one of the nicest MLB photos of all time,” someone wrote.

“I’m not joking when I say this might be one of the greatest pictures ever taken,” this person agreed.

This one called for a pay bump for the fantastic photographer, “Give the photographer a raise. Incredible.”

This person recalled another famous Minnesotan who was likely looking down on the Twins. “It’s like Prince’s up there reminding everyone how much he loves his hometown of Minneapolis.”

The Game Was Stopped Due To Storms

The Associated Press reported that the Twins’ game against Atlanta was paused due to powerful thunderstorms. While fans waited for the storms to pass, they saw rainbow lightning paint the sky.

According to BBC meteorologist Dan Holley , rainbow lightning occurs when a thunderstorm is happy while the sun is still shining. “The sunlight gets refracted and reflected by water droplets.”

“The viewer would need to be between the thunderstorm and the sun, with their back to the sun,” he said in 2021.
