A whale-watching group was treated to the experience of a lifetime when they witnessed dolphins leaping out of the water! These tourists were stunned to see these incredible creatures putting on a show so close to their boat. Gone Whale Watching, the San Diego tour company responsible for the magical excursion, posted a video of the encounter. According to their caption, there have been quite a few magnificent dolphin sightings this season.

“It’s been a great summer for spotting acrobatic offshore Bottlenose Dolphins, and today Capt. @erica.sackrison managed to capture these beautiful animals doing what they do best!” they wrote.

In the spectacular clip, a pair of dolphins performed an epic, synchronized jump near a boat full of whale watchers. One of these creatures soared several feet into the air! Nearby, even more of these aquatic mammals appeared to be splashing around in the water.

“The greatest dolphin show in the world is the one that happens in the WILD!” said Gone Whale Watching on Instagram.

Photographer Erica Sackrison loved capturing this stunning moment on camera.

“You could just see them jumping like, 20 feet in the air, and everybody on the boat just started pointing and I’m like, what is everybody looking at?” Erica recalled to CBS8 . “Almost feels like they were doing Olympic-style jumps, like they were just all trying to be like Simone Biles and just touch the sky and come down. It was awesome.”

San Diego has been seeing a lot of dolphins lately!

Erica told the news outlet that whale-watching tourists actually got to see plenty more dolphins that day. In fact, the photographer recounted that they observed large groups of dolphins in the water every few miles! Domenic Biagini, founder of Gone Whale Watching, explained that they’re probably drawn to food sources off the San Diego coast.

“Anchovies are really, really popular food source, especially for the common dolphins,” he said. “But we’ve also been seeing bottlenose dolphins in bigger numbers, and the bottlenose dolphins are the ones that you see in those spectacular videos, leaping into the air. And often times when we see bottlenose dolphins here in numbers like that, it’s because there’s a lot of squid in San Diego waters.”

He concluded, “So most likely, we have an influx of squid right now.”

Whatever the reason for this fantastic dolphin sighting, we’re sure these lucky whale watchers won’t soon forget the experience!
