Henry Winkler Knew Robin Williams Was A “Genius”

PEOPLE shared details from the podcast episode. Winkler joined the podcast Fake Doctors, Real Friends with Zach and Donald and discussed his late co-star Robin Williams.

He recalled how he knew from the moment he began his Happy Days audition that Robin Williams was a star. He recalled that none of the actors on the show wanted to play an alien from outer space. However, Robin Williams wanted the role. Henry Winkler recalls when his Happy Days co-star, Robin Williams, first came on set.

He said, “Finally, a young, very shy, very quiet man comes with the casting director.” Although Robert was shy off-camera, that changed once the camera started rolling. Winkler recalled, “When he opened his mouth, it was like a volcano went off on stage 19 at Paramount.”

He also stated, “And I knew, get out of his way, know my lines, and don’t try to stand toe to toe with this genius that is now standing in front of me.”

Robin Williams Was Loved By Many

The incredible actor made his debut as the Mork, the alien from Ork. However, he would later have many successful roles. He is well known for his roles in movies such as Jumanji , Night At The Museum , Mrs. Doubtfire , Aladdin , and many more.

Henry Winkler was not the only one who was dazzled by Robin Williams. The Happy Days director was also impressed by the emerging star. He told PEOPLE , “When Robin Williams came on as a Martian, he was all over the place and was improvising some, and they gave him room.”

He continued by explaining that once Williams finished the episode, “300 people in the audience stood up and applauded, which is not usually done.” From there, they knew he could do his own show, and so they made him one.

Robin Williams had a fantastic career and touched the lives of many with his humor and joy. He is greatly missed.
