So much work goes into preparing for hurricanes. This is especially true for particularly dangerous ones like Hurricane Milton. To best know what kind of storm we’ll be dealing with, there are a variety of methods that can be used before they’ve reached land. One way involves Hurricane Hunters — these folks fly planes straight into the storm . That said, not all methods involve humans getting that close to danger.

Another helpful method uses drones from a company called Saildrone. Their partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has been instrumental in providing much-needed info on hurricanes for the past four years. Plus, the views they capture are absolutely breathtaking. The video below, which gives us a glimpse inside Hurricane Milton, provides the perfect example.

“We’re able to collect barometric data like barometric pressure, wind strength, ocean salinity,” Robin Dean, VP of Program Delivery at Saildrone explains . “Those are very important pieces of information for scientists to understand the rapid intensification of hurricanes.”

In order to obtain this info, these drones have to be built to withstand even the most intense hurricanes. But whatever effort it takes is absolutely worth it. This is true, in part, because it allows the remote pilots who control them to stay safe.

“Saildrones were designed to be very robust sailing platforms. They go out there and they take a beating,” Robin says. “You can see under the drone is a keel. That keeps the fin below the drone is weighted with lead. And so, the wind that the sail drone experiences above the surface is counteracted by that big lead fin below the drone.”

Drones Provide Us With Powerful Data on Hurricane Milton, Too

While the unique views we’ve been getting of Hurricane Milton have been amazing, what’s most important is the data these excursions provide.

“We recognize these hurricanes are very destructive to the people,” Robin says . “We hope the data we collect is powerful for scientists to develop ideas on how we can reduce the risk for damage and loss of life.”
