Cancer is agonizing, and some say the unknown is the most difficult part. From the moment a loved one receives a cancer diagnosis, it is scary. When Hayley Erbert had an emergency craniectomy and cranioplasty in December 2023, she thought her dancing career might be over. Hayley returned triumphantly to Dancing With The Stars on October 15, dancing to Benson Boone’s Beautiful Things with husband Derek Hough. It was an emotional moment for the pair.

Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert Opened Up About Her Cancer Diagnosis

Derek shared in a recorded piece before their dance, “It was kind of a crazy time. Hayley and I were heading back on the road for the final leg of the tour. Living out our dreams onstage, doing what we love with the person that we love, and then it just all came to a screeching halt in the most devastating way.”

Hayley echoed her husband’s words after they danced.

“Obviously this was the most challenging thing I’ve ever been through in my entire life, physically and mentally.  was a lot on all of us as a family and I just—you never know what you’re capable of until you go through something like this.”

The dance touched many fans’ hearts.

One wrote, “I sobbed the whole time watching. I hope and pray that God continues to keep Hayley healthy so she can keep dancing and I pray for Derek as well.”
