AC energy costs cut by 50% with spacecraft tech that’s 8 times more effective

At a time when global temperature is on the rapid rise and the demand for air conditioner’s usage has also surged, a Houston-based company has introduced a technology to slash energy usage by existing AC systems.
This will help fight greenhouse gas emissions as most of the energy doesn’t come from renewable sources.
Repurposed by Helix Earth Technologies, the method was actually developed by company CEO Rawand Rasheed and his team when he was at NASA. The technology was originally developed to filter air on spacecraft.
Device lowers power needs by 50%
Called Helix Micra, the unit pre-dehumidifies supply air, substantially dropping the load on the existing unit and lowering power needs by 50%. There is no need to replace or modify existing units, according to the company .
Rasheed claims the Helix Micra system is six to eight times more efficient than other commercially available dehumidification systems, is much smaller than current systems, and the filters are easy to manufacture using 3D printing, which can be done using recycled materials, reported New Atlas .
There is no need for additional structural support on rooftops, according to the company.
Helix Micra unit is serviceable in minutes
Imagine one technician in a few hours adding a device that effortlessly connects to nearly any existing AC rooftop unit (RTU) or dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS), said the company.
The Helix Micra unit is serviceable in minutes on the same schedule as your AC maintenance, according to the company.
The breakthrough HVAC retrofit device brings unmatched efficiency and energy savings to existing air conditioning units. The device is claimed to be a game-changer for those paying utilities on commercial properties and buying equipment.
Adding Helix products will be a good choice for both retrofits and replacement situations.
The company hasn’t given specific price details for units as these need to be customized for different systems. However, the unit is said to have a life of around 15 to 20 years. The company claims that the unit will pay for itself within three years.
Helix Earth Technologies to initially focus on Texas market
Before expanding the product’s availability across the US and the world, the company will initially focus on the Texas market.
Created with no moving parts, Helix Micra units capture micrometer-sized droplets of water sprayed on spacecraft in an attempt to battle catastrophic fires. This capability helps the unit to be suitable for pre-dehumidifying the air supplied to AC rooftop unit.
