Hyundai is set to revolutionize the automobile market yet again with its Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV). Equipped with Hyundai’s hybrid technology, this one will combine the output of an internal combustion engine with an electric motor. The motor can provide a long driving range.

Quite different from traditional EVs, this EREV leverages an internal combustion engine which is designed for recharging the battery. The EREV can travel up to 900 kilometers at a full charge and will drive in the regions of the US, China, and Canada owing to their vast land areas.

Hyundai plans to launch the new model in 2027, and will also begin the mass production of EREVs in North America and China by 2026. According to the Korean car maker, these EREVs could address the limitations of traditional EVs. It can travel up to 560 miles (900 kilometers) on a single charge.

Rumors are rife that the price of the vehicle can be lower than traditional EVs since it has a smaller battery capacity.

Hyundai expands EREV lineup with advanced D-class SUVs and innovative technology

The initial offerings of the EREVs include D-class SUVs under the Hyundai and Genesis brands. Santa Fe and GV70 are the prime candidates. An EREV comes with a battery, motor, and engine, and is quite similar to a hybrid vehicle.

When the EREV’s battery runs low, its internal combustion engine kicks in which helps generate electricity to recharge the battery. In its setup, it uses a new powertrain and power electronics (PT/PE) system that helps enable a four-wheel drive with the application of two motors.

As a brand Hyundai features a unique collection of cars as a part of its lineup. Notable ones among them include Hyundai Ioniq 5, Hyundai Kona Electric, Hyundai Ioniq 6, and Hyundai Ioniq Electric.

The organization has been expanding its electric vehicle portfolio being greatly committed to sustainability practices. Most of its EVs are built on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) that helps it to charge faster, sometimes even as little as 18 minutes.

These cars are famous for their advanced technology and connectivity features, like over-the-air updates, and smart regenerative braking which can adjust based on real-time driving conditions.

Hyundai and Kia set ambitious EREV sales targets and expand into pickup market

As of now, Hyundai plans to sell around 80,000 EREV units annually. Kia and Hyundai also plan to incorporate EREV technology into pickup trucks which Hyundai is developing currently. They are codenamed TE and TV, about to be released in 2028 and 2029, respectively.

Previously, Hyundai had also unveiled an EREV concept vehicle, the i-oniq, at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. The automaker is yet to mass produce an EREV model. Currently, Chinese auto manufacturers like Li Auto, Xiaomi, and Nio also launched EREVs.

EREVs are designed to offer flexible solutions to those seeking the environmental benefits of an EV without the range anxiety associated with longer trips. These vehicles come with the ability to drive on pure electric power and are suitable for both short and long distances.
