A Japanese man has claimed that he slept only for half an hour every day for almost 12 years, believing this would “double” his life expectancy. He also stated it boosted his work efficiency.

Named, Daisuke Hori, 40, from Hyogo prefecture, Japan, has been a man of supreme fitness.

He revealed that he trained his body and mind in such a way that they could function normally with minimal sleep and never feel tired. Hori started cutting back on sleep around 12 years ago so he could get more active hours every day. He would sleep only for 30 to 45 minutes on a daily basis.

Hori also noted that as long as a person doesn’t indulge in any sports activity or drink coffee an hour before eating, drowsiness could be avoided.

An entrepreneur with a passion for music, painting, and mechanical design, Hori is unique. He founded the Japan Short Sleepers Training Association in 2016, offering classes on sleep and health.

    High-quality sleep over quantity

Hori observed that people needing sustained focus at work often benefit more from high-quality sleep than prolonged sleep .

A TV channel in Japan followed Hori’s activities for a few days and discovered he slept only 26 minutes daily. He woke up energetic, seeing clearly.

His day included breakfast, work, and an intense gym session. As of now, Hori has taught around 2,100 students who also became ultra-short sleepers.

One student told a TV channel she reduced her sleep from 8 hours daily to just 90 minutes. She trained hard and maintained this for four years, with no harm to her physical or mental health.

Notably, sleeping less has been common in countries like India, where ascetics practice Yoga.

    Doctors caution against ultra-short sleep

Social media has been abuzz with this development. Some called him a “true master” of time management, saying, “I want to learn how to sleep less and work more efficiently,” and “Maybe I’m wasting too much energy.”

However, according to doctors, short sleep isn’t recommended for everyone, as it comes with its own side effects. Guo Fei, a neurologist at Huazhong University of Science and Technology Xiehe Shenzhen Hospital, stated that adults should get seven to nine hours of sleep daily.

Sleep is crucial for the body and brain to recover and repair, according to Guo. The neurologist further added that a lack of good sleep can cause a severe decline in memory and a weakened immunity. Mood disorders and increased cardiovascular disease risks are also possible.

Most doctors recommend 7 to 9 hours of continuous sleep, even for those exercising regularly, running, or going to the gym.
