Stockholm-based Enerpoly has opened the world’s first zinc-ion battery megafactory, which will start production in 2025.

Founded in 2018, the company is known for making zinc-ion battery cell technology, which could play a significant role in the transition to a clean energy future.

The 6,500m² (70,000ft²) Enerpoly Production Innovation Center (EPIC) facility is located in Rosersberg in northern Stockholm.

This state-of-the-art facility marks a pivotal moment in the global transition to clean energy. By 2026, the megafactory is expected to be operating at full capacity, producing 100 megawatt-hours annually.

“With EPIC, our focus is firmly on driving sustainable innovation, and meeting the growing demand for renewable energy storage. By scaling up our production, we can deliver first-of-all-kind deployments in partnership with utilities and battery system integrators across Europe and globally,” said Eloisa de Castro, Enerpoly CEO.

    Promising energy storage

Zinc-ion batteries are touted as promising energy storage technology.

The inherent safety and lower cost of zinc-ion batteries — compared to lithium-ion batteries — make them a potential solution.

The uses of such batteries are said to be many. For instance, zinc-ion batteries can help balance the power grid by storing surplus renewable energy from sources such as solar and wind. Moreover, these might be used in portable devices like smartphones and laptops.

Interestingly, automobile experts are also exploring the potential of powering electric vehicles with zinc-ion batteries.

In July 2024, Enerpoly expanded its manufacturing capacity by adding cutting-edge dry electrode manufacturing equipment to its megafactory.

“The end-to-end battery production line and process development capabilities will allow Enerpoly to accelerate production capabilities; lower costs, waste, and energy consumption; and deliver more sustainable energy storage solutions,” the press release noted.

    Raised $8.4 million in 2023

This announcement comes on the heels of Enerpoly’s recent announcement of complete battery cell and pack production capabilities. Moreover, the company raised $8.4 million in investment raised in 2023.

The megafactory will allow Enerpoly to test its battery solutions on a large scale in various commercial, industrial, and utility applications.

Zinc -ion batteries from Enerpoly are designed to address a wide range of energy storage needs, including grid stabilization, backup power, and applications requiring high levels of reliability.

The applications for zinc-ion batteries are especially relevant in maritime settings, critical infrastructure, and densely populated urban areas.

This new facility could be a game-changer for Europe’s ambitions to lead in zinc-ion battery technology.

The research and development around zinc-ion batteries is gaining pace.

Last year, researchers in Korea announced the development of a smart zinc-ion battery that can change colors to indicate its charging and discharging status.

Interesting Engineering reported that this innovative technology addresses the growing demand for smarter energy storage solutions in wearable devices. The color-changing feature eliminates the need for separate displays, streamlining device design and potentially improving battery life.
