Dubai-based Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) has unveiled the world’s first biodiesel truck that can also be powered by solar panels. The innovatively powered truck was unveiled at the ongoing Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX) 2024 at the World Trade Center in Dubai.

Countries around the world are keen to move away from fossil fuels. However, industrial heating or long-haul transport applications cannot be powered by clean energy yet.

Instead of waiting for technology to mature to a level where clean energy sources can power heavy applications, innovative solutions such as biodiesel can work as short-term solutions.

Biodiesel burns cleanly, produces more energy, and creates fewer carbon emissions than fossil fuels. Therefore, it is environmentally friendly. This can help industrial activity continue while reducing harm to the environment.

    Fossil fuel to biofuel

Dubai-based ENOC Group is a company owned by the Government of Dubai and has been engaged in oil and gas production since it was established in 1993. With customers in over 60 markets, ENOC Group subsidiaries are engaged in activities like refining, lubricant blending, and aviation – industries with heavy usage of fossil fuels.

After the United Arab Emirates (UAE) outlined its sustainability goals and mission to achieve Net Zero by 2050, the group has also been engaged in biodiesel production.

An alternative to fossil fuel, biodiesel is synthesized using vegetable oils, animal fats, or even restaurant waste. It can be used either by blending it with fossil fuels or as is in engines.

Over the past four years, ENOC Group has delivered more than 2.6 million gallons (10 million liters) of biodiesel in either pure or blended form, signaling a shift in demand for biofuels. These deliveries occur through the group’s fuel delivery service, ENOC Link.

    Powered by solar

At WETEX, ENOC Link unveiled a solar-powered biodiesel delivery truck. Using two 550W solar panels , the truck can operate for a full eight hours. It has a 1,320-gallon (5,000-liter) capacity and is divided into two compartments to facilitate the transportation and distribution of two biodiesel blends simultaneously.

Energy from the solar panels is stored in two 240V batteries that serve as a primary power source. A 24V battery is a secondary source of power in case the primary fails or runs out of charge. To enable a comfortable ride for the drivers, the truck is also equipped with a separate 24V battery that powers the air conditioner.

The photovoltaic panels on these trucks can generate 1.3 MWh of energy annually, which roughly translates to an equivalent reduction of 6.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

“At ENOC Group, we are committed to delivering pioneering energy solutions to realise a more sustainable future for everyone,” said Saif Humaid Al Falasi, Group CEO, ENOC Group, in a press release .

“By encouraging the adoption of cleaner fuel options that will reduce emission levels and enhance operational efficiencies, we are taking a significant step towards contributing to strengthening the national economy and improving quality of life within the society in line with the National Biofuels Policy.”
