A police department in Southern California is making headlines with the introduction of what they claim is the country’s first Tesla Cybertruck designated for police use.

However, the Irvine Police Department (IPD) says this unique vehicle will have a limited role and won’t be patrolling the streets anytime soon.

The Irvine Police Department showcased the Cybertruck in a flashy video on social media platforms like Facebook and X. The purchase cost a staggering $153,175.03, which includes the installation of emergency equipment.

The Cybertruck will primarily be used to enhance anti-drug events at schools through the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program. The department aims to grab the attention of students with the futuristic design of the Cybertruck.

“For over three decades, our DARE officers have driven attention-grabbing and one-of-a-kind vehicles that never fail to turn heads and excite students,” the department stated on Facebook.

A short video produced by the Irvine Police Department showcases the Cybertruck driving alone at night, complete with flashing lights and dramatic background music. The intention is to make a strong impression on students and engage them in meaningful conversations about drug awareness.

    Cost Comparison and Longevity

To provide some context, the IPD highlighted the cost comparison with a more traditional vehicle: the Ford Police Interceptor.

That vehicle has an estimated price tag of $116,000 and typically lasts three to four years. In contrast, the department plans to use the Cybertruck for about ten years.

As reported by NBC News , Sgt. Karie Davies, a spokesperson for the department, explained via email that the Cybertruck would save money over time. One significant advantage is that the vehicle is electric, eliminating the need for gasoline. The police department needed a new D.A.R.E. vehicle, making this a timely replacement.

“The Cybertruck is a replacement for another DARE vehicle that has reached its shelf life,” she said.

    A rocky road ahead

Despite its innovative design, the Cybertruck has had a tumultuous launch since Tesla started delivering it in November. While sales estimates appear optimistic, the vehicle has faced five recalls due to software or equipment issues.

Additionally, it has garnered attention for its quirks, such as not being able to be washed in direct sunlight, leading to its status as a frequent target for internet humor.

Although the Irvine Police Department will not use the Cybertruck for regular patrols, they have not entirely ruled out other potential uses.

“While the fully equipped vehicle won’t be used as a patrol car, it can respond to emergencies and assist the community when needed,” the police department mentioned on Facebook.

    Engaging the community

The introduction of the Cybertruck aligns with IPD’s long-standing tradition of using unique vehicles to engage students and the community. It’s worth noting that IPD is one of only two agencies in California still running a D.A.R.E. program.

The unveiling of the Cybertruck was accentuated by the iconic music from Terminator 2: Judgment Day , composed by Brad Fiedel, which adds a bold and futuristic vibe to the reveal.

The department believes that the Cybertruck will help officers foster connections with the youth of Irvine, promoting positive interactions within the community.

In the coming weeks, residents will have a chance to see the Cybertruck up close at various community events hosted by the IPD. These events will allow the public to take photos and engage with officers while learning more about the department’s initiatives.
