Novato homeless encampment burns; police ask for help
July 30, 2024 – Early this morning, around 3:30AM, Novato Police Officers and Novato Fire District Personnel responded to a fire within the temporary encampment at Lee Gerner Park. The fire spread quickly, burning several tents, the perimeter fence, and the large tree in the center of camp. Novato Fire swiftly contained and extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby businesses or the Novato Creek. Residents were evacuated safely, and no injuries were reported due to the fire. Novato Police Department and Novato Fire District are actively investigating this incident as arson.
