Northeast Iowa creek has second mystery fish kill
About 40,000 fish died in Crane Creek last week, but it's unclear what killed them. (Photo courtesy of Iowa DNR) For the second time in a little more than a year, something has killed thousands of fish in a northeast Iowa creek without leaving obvious clues to identify it, according to state conservation officers.
Charles City to Join North Central Conference After All
Charles City will be joining the North Central Conference (NCC) after all. The decision comes following a mediation process facilitated by the Iowa Department of Education, the Iowa High School Athletic Association, and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. A transition plan was then developed by the executive board of the NCC to integrate Charles City into the conference, starting with the 2025-26 school year.

Iowa City Herky Statues are Now Available as Bobbleheads [GALLERY]
25 of the 2024 'Herky on Parade' statues now have their very own bobbleheads!. Earlier this year, 100 new, unique Herky statues were unveiled and placed around the Iowa City area as part of the 3rd generation of 'Herky on Parade.' According to the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame website, it was the "largest public art project Iowa has ever produced," and all 100 of the statues were painted by local or regional artists.
W-SR’s Conference Hunt Goes Before the Dept. of Ed.
The mediation team from the Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has passed its recommendation on regarding Waverly-Shell Rock and the WaMac. Their recommendation is that W-SR not be allowed in the conference. Director of the Iowa Department of Education, McKenzie Snow, now has to review and make a decision within 45 days. It is the stated policy of the state of Iowa that every school desiring to be in a conference should be granted that opportunity. The Go-Hawks will be independent in the upcoming school year.

West Nile Has Been Found in Iowa Mosquitoes
The good news is that at the time of writing, no humans in Iowa have yet tested positive for the West Nile virus. Mosquitos on the other hand have been found containing the virus in central Iowa. According to KCRG, mosquitoes were trapped at a park in West Ames sometime in mid-July. The park where these mosquitoes were found is sprayed or fogged every Wednesday night. Some of these mosquitoes contained the West Nile virus.
