The preseason award watch lists are releasing and the Iowa Hawkeyes are finding themselves very present among those to keep an eye on.

Yesterday saw Logan Jones named to the Outland Trophy Watch List along with a trio of Hawkeyes, Jay Higgins, Nick Jackson, and Sebastian Castro, all named to the Nagurski Trophy Watch List.

The newest watch list featuring a Hawkeyes is one that they are mighty familiar with. Defensive back Sebastian Castro has been named to the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List.

The Jim Thorpe Award is presented annually to the nation’s best defensive back in college football. The award is after the legendary Jim Thorpe, an Olympic gold medalist and member of both the Pro Football and College Football Hall of Fame.

The Paycom Jim Thorpe Award is universally accepted as one of the  nation’s top collegiate sports honors, and is presented to individual athletes based on performance on the field, athletic ability and character. – Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame

Iowa’s previous winner of the Jim Thorpe Award came in 2014 when Desmond King took home the hardware. Sebastian Castro will aim to be the next Hawkeye to hoist the prestigious award.

Sebastian Castro, a native of Oak Lawn, Illinois and Richards High School, is primed for a big step forward in 2024 after a 2023 season that saw him total 67 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 11 pass deflections, 3 interceptions, and one interception returned for a touchdown.
