The Iowa Transportation Commission recently approved the Fiscal Year 2025-2029 Iowa Transportation Improvement Program at its June meeting.

The program is developed and approved annually and documents investments in the state’s multimodal transportation system.

The most recent version includes approximately $4.5 billion in highway and bridge projects expected to be constructed over the next five years. More than $3.9 billion will be invested to update the safety and condition of existing state highways and bridges while more than $1.4 billion will be spent on additional bridge investments.

Other investments include projects that address safety and operational needs, and projects that replace major river crossings, modernize interchanges to improve safety and handle future traffic demands, and add capacity where necessary.

Funding is specific to the state highway system which is comprised of interstate, U.S., and Iowa signed routes. The interstate system connects all the state’s transportation systems and facilitates the efficient movement of freight within, to/from, and through Iowa.

Projects are evaluated on congestion, condition, safety, traffic, and other data to ensure they are necessary to provide modern, safe, and efficient transportation of goods and the traveling public. Projects must be consistent with the goals and objectives of the State Long-Range Transportation Plan.
