Forecast: A Few Storms, Drying Out, and Beryl

    By Jason Parkin,

Let’s get the most exciting news out of the way first: we have almost no severe storm risk for most of the 7-day forecast. Colorado State’s severe weather algorithm below shows a slight risk Sunday evening, but the likelihood seems low as I type this Friday evening.

On Saturday, a trough of low pressure will cross Iowa and cause a line of storms to form to our west and move through during the evening and early morning. In short, storm chances are best this weekend between 8PM and 8AM both Saturday and Sunday (into Monday morning).

Sunday’s storms will form in the evening along a cool front pushing through Iowa, shown below. Notice also Hurricane Beryl nearing landfall at that time.

Below, the Weather Prediction Center shows rainfall amounts through Wednesday evening. These should be low enough to not create too many troubles on area waterways. Notice the heavy swath of expected rainfall as Beryl makes its way through the South.

Hurricane Beryl’s forecast from the National Hurricane Center as of Friday evening is shown below.

High temperatures should stay in the low to mid-80’s throughout the week.

It appears we may see a sustained warm and dry period during the middle of July here in Iowa, as shown in the outlooks below from the Climate Prediction Center .
