(Iowa) — The Iowa Department of Transportation has received 28 applications for automated speed cameras following a new state law requiring jurisdictions to apply by July 1. Cities and towns across Iowa, including Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, and Sioux City, submitted applications for 321 potential camera locations.

The bill would require cities and counties to apply for a permit from the Department of Transportation to install speed cameras. Cameras would not issue citations unless a vehicle goes at least ten miles an hour over the speed limit. Revenue from citations would have to be used for transportation infrastructure or to offset costs for police and fire.
