There are no characters that I could care for. They are just not people I could sit down and have a conversation with. At first, the boyfriend seems like the nice guy, but even he falls from his own grace, and it's a cheap-shot takedown. The brother seems angry, jealous and possessive to the extreme. He hints that we'll know all about him, and might come to like him. Mara, the woman who is the center of this confusing universe, and the one who gets the brunt of the pain, is just not likeable. Not because of the terrible secrets in her past (and possibly present) that she has endured, but because she seems to prefer her substance addictions over her boyfriend's understanding and desire to help her. That's not an unusual, or original, plot point, because that's what substance abusers do: they abuse themselves and those close to them and create their own distorted reality in which everyone else is expected to exist according to the rules. "Inheritence" is not especially well-directed. The characters are all too much alike, with little palpable energy among all the ups and downs of the story. Not quite flatline, but not quite alive is how I would describe it. We're fed all kinds of intriguing tidbits, expecting to have some insight, but little comes. I don't understand directors who seem to have something important to say, then waste plodding minutes of film that seem to hang in the air then evaporate into the next scene. Ten minutes of this already short film could easily have been cut because they tell us little, if nothing, about what we're trying to grasp. I haven't yet read the other reviews, because I don't like to be influenced by the opinions of others before the fact. I look forward to seeing what they thought or felt about this movie. I was able to fill in a lot of blanks but some may not have the patience or the desire. The ending is more symbolic than satisfying. Overall, an interesting film and memorable, but it might not be everyone's cup of tea.
