Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont proposes rate increase
Some Vermonters could see the cost of their insurance rise next year after Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont announced a proposed rate increase Monday. The insurance provider covers roughly 30 percent of Vermonters, and plans to increase individual rates by 21 percent. Small group plans for businesses with up to 100 employees could see a 24 percent increase.

The house Allison Doe rented in Plainfield hadn’t been a perfect home. Doe, 64, moved to the Brook Road residence five years ago from Williston because she was excited to live “in the country,” she said. A former animal hospital employee, she loved being in the company of chipmunks and chickadees. The rent was cheaper, too, but the home, which Doe described as more like a camp, was bitter cold in the winter. She became desperate to move, but struggled to find the help she needed to relocate.
Woman arrested in Maine for theft of Lyndonville dump truck
LYNDONVILLE — A woman was arrested in Bangor, Maine, after allegedly stealing a dump truck from a Lyndonville business, police said. The Lyndonville Police Department reported that around 9:54 a.m. on July 25, Creative Counters LLC reported a 2015 GMC dump truck and other company property were stolen overnight.

University of Vermont researchers study impact of flooding on Lake Champlain water quality
University of Vermont scientists studying Lake Champlain are assessing changes in water quality following recent flooding in Vermont. Numerous rivers empty into Lake Champlain and scientists are measuring water clarity as floodwaters empty into the 100-mile-long lake. The Lake Champlain Basin Program and Lake Champlain Sea Grant hosted cruises on the University of Vermont research vessel recently for officials to observe a plume of turbid water extending into the lake.
Ira Allen biography coming soon: Let’s hear from its author, Kevin Graffagnino
A new biography on early Vermont trailblazer Ira Allen is slated for release on Sept. 13. It is the first published book on Allen to come out in nearly a century. While Allen might be most well-known for his influence in landing the University of Vermont in Burlington, he also at one point in time, owned virtually all of Colchester. On paper, he was also Colchester’s first-ever town clerk.
