Almost two dozen dogs arrived in Massachusetts after being rescued from puppy mills in Missouri .

Boston-based non-profit for animal-cruelty prevention, MSPCA-Angell, announced the arrival of the dogs, which included cocker spaniels, papillons, Havaneses, and other so-called ‘designer dogs.’

The dogs were removed from overcrowded breeding facilities, also known as puppy mills. It is likely that the dogs were over-bred and did not receive adequate medical treatment.

The puppies at the facilities are often not properly socialized, resulting in behavioral problems.

The dogs were taken to their shelter in Salem, Massachusetts and will be listed as soon as they’re undergone medical checks and are available for adoption. They are aged between 1 and 10 years old. The society warned that the rescued pups may have additional medical needs and will require extra care and patience, which they ask potential adopters to keep in mind.

MSPCA-Angell are advocating for the state of Massachusetts to completely ban pet shops from selling dogs, cats and rabbits. The sale of commercially bred pets has already been banned by the cities of Boston and Cambridge.

The proposed bill would allow pet shops to source animals from local shelters and rescue organizations, the MSPCA-Angell said.
